The Golden Rule is a basic principle which should always be followed to ensure success in general or in a particular activity. It is a biblically based rule found in Matthew 7:12 “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”
The fact that this rule, this command as it was initially delivered has been around for so long, at least 2000 years, must have some precedence and there must at the very least be an element of truth. And indeed the Golden Rule does have an element of truth; it has in fact a great deal of truth and truth that can be documented.
But the Golden Rule having been around for so long and lived by so many demonstrates one thing very clearly. The fact the Golden Rule offers something not just here today and gone tomorrow but something that, like God Himself is the same today, yesterday and forever, offers long term security and comfort. Doing to or for others as you would wish to have done to or for yourself indicates a person applying the Golden Rule truly expects, not demands but expects, some form of return in the future. This optimistic view the Golden Rule automatically creates also creates something of much more value than just a return.
