The Golden Rule is in fact a biblical rule. It is written in Matthew 7:12 “Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” (NKJV) The Message Bible describes it as follows: “Here is a simple, rule-of-thumb guide for behaviour: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you, then grab the initiative and do it for them. Add up God’s Law and Prophets and this is what you get.”
The Golden rule is termed a rule of thumb. A rule of thumb is defined in Wikipedia as “a principle with broad application that is not intended to be strictly accurate or reliable for every situation. It is an easily learned and easily applied procedure for approximately calculating or recalling some value, or for making some determination.” Being a rule of thumb therefore means it may not be accurate and it may also not be reliable. If this is so then why on earth do we want to follow it?
