What is the Golden Rule? The Golden Rule is a biblically based and very real way of treating others and yourself. It is based on Matthew 7:12 “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.” (KJV).
The Golden Rule is really very simple, it is a biblical and proven law if you really look at it is something that in today’s instant gratification world is something that really seems to have been forgotten. The bible is littered with verses that suggest and indeed recommend doing good for others and being the servant leader and just before the chapter where the Golden Rule appears Matthew 5:41 says something that is a key part of the Golden Rule it reads “If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.” The Message Bible expands on it a little more and makes sense of going the extra mile in a very modern world it reads “Here’s another old saying that deserves a second look: ‘Eye for eye, tooth for tooth.’ Is that going to get us anywhere? Here’s what I propose: ‘Don’t hit back at all.’ If someone strikes you, stand there and take it. If someone drags you into court and sues for the shirt off your back, gift wrap your best coat and make a present of it. And if someone takes unfair advantage of you, use the occasion to practice the servant life. No more tit-for-tat stuff. Live generously.”
