Matthew 7:12 says “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets”(NIV) but how far should a person take this and apply what is termed the Golden Rule?
The brutal answer is all the way and as far as possible. In applying the Golden Rule only the very best will do for the person giving, doing or helping someone else, it is after all “what you would have them do for you” and of course we, if we are honest want the best or better than the best. It does therefore suggest that we should not just try to give or do our best or as much as we can, or think we can, but actually do so. The world famous Nike advert that says “Just do it” really should apply to the Golden rule.
