Independence Day has been celebrated since the nation’s birth in 1776. Philadelphia hosted the first celebration of the day on July 4, 1777 while the nation was still embroiled in war. By 1781, Massachusetts became the first state to make July 4th an official state holiday, with other states following its lead. The holiday was celebrated in the following years but became especially widespread following the War of 1812, when the United States successfully repelled an invasion by England. Congress made July 4th a federal holiday in 1941, securing Independence Day as a day for Americans to celebrate its heritage.
